Update 10/2/20 – PHE is extended
The declared Public Health Emergency (PHE) for COVID-19 that was set to expire Oct 23, has now been extended by HHS Secretary Alex Azar for another 90 days, until Jan 21, 2021. This is great news for cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs, because CMS is reimbursing for home-based CR/PR sessions during the PHE, at normal onsite session rates (see below). This extension will help cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs (CR/PR) dramatically increase billed sessions and revenue over the next 3 months, while many are having to operate at under 50% normal onsite capacity with social distancing and are struggling financially.
As a resource for CR/PR programs interested in utilizing this PHE reimbursement, AACVPR has put together a FACT SHEET that can be shared directly with the compliance department at your hospital for approval. It clarifies how the home-based sessions are to be billed for compliance, based on recent CMS clarifications.
Chanl Health is putting together a “Getting Started” guide for onsite CR/PR programs that are looking to get up and running quickly with home-based sessions to take advantage of the increased revenue as much as possible over the next 3 months.

In response to the Public Health Emergency (PHE), CMS has added many temporary policies and regulatory revisions which expand the use of telehealth services and technology to better address patient needs during the pandemic. These expansions have allowed some cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs across the country to begin successfully billing home-based rehab sessions under CPT 93797 and G0424, and significantly increase their revenue while their onsite programs are at limited capacity.
To assist cardiac and pulmonary rehab programs in understanding these complicated policies and equip them to reach out to their compliance departments about billing for home-based sessions, Chanl Health presented a webinar on 8/13/20 and created a “Compliance Information Sheet” that can be shared with your hospital’s billing and compliance departments, in order to get approval for billing-home-based rehab sessions.
Once you have checked with your compliance, please let us know if you are interested in discussing home-based rehab at your program. Chanl Health helps programs get up and running with home-based rehab within 1-week, and we would love to help your program reach more patients.
